Over the past few years, our family has traveled extensively throughout the US, and we’ve found some great spring break ideas for families. Spring Break Ideas for Families in the United States

Here are the ultimate spring break destinations for families! You'll find warm weather destinations, big cities, mountain towns, and national parks - something for everyone!

1. Road Trip through the Florida Keys

If you want that tropical island feel without leaving the country, why not plan a road trip through the Florida Keys? As a former Florida resident, I can attest to the fact that this part of the state feels completely different with its island vibes and laid-back pace of life. In my opinion, it's one of the best places to go for spring break in the United States with the whole family.

Fly into Miami, rent a car, and drive through Homestead where you can stop to see Coral Castle, a roadside attraction where one man built a series of limestone sculptures without machines. Crazy and cool! Stop in Key Largo for some conch fritters at Alabama Jacks, and Islamorada to feed the tarpon at Robbie’s Marina (one of the highlights of our trip!)

We stayed in Key West and found plenty of family-friendly activities including visiting Ernest Hemingway’s house, riding the trolley, seeing the southernmost point in the continental United States, and even spending the day at Dry Tortugas National Park!

The main draw is that you KNOW it will be nice and warm in the Keys, so if you’re looking to escape winter like us Midwesterners, you can’t go wrong with a Florida Keys trip.

Insider Tip: To make accommodations in Key West more affordable, consider splitting a vacation rental with friends or extended family!

2. Sequoia National Park

Sequoia National Park is best seen in summer or early fall, but if you want to avoid the crowds, consider making this kid-friendly national park part of your spring break plans!

The weather in spring is mild, but you may still get some snow, especially in early spring. If you have a later spring break in April, you might enjoy the weather a bit more.

Sequoia has amazing hikes that even young children can do, and some of the most scenic drives that feature sky-high sequoia trees and the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It's a great place for epic views and kid-friendly hikes.

I did this trip with my 3 oldest kids when they were 1, 3, and 5 along with my parents, and we were able to fit the highlights in one day.

If you’re craving some warm weather, too, I would suggest road tripping down to Southern California as part of your trip.

3. Phoenix, AZ

Sunshine, desert, and a sprawling, active city make for the perfect spring break spot for families!

I visited Phoenix solo with my 2 youngest kids in February, and the weather was absolutely perfect! Cool evenings and sunny and warm, but not too hot days make spring the perfect time to visit.

There are so many kid-friendly activities like the Phoenix Zoo, the Desert Botanical Garden, the Hole-in-the-Rock hike, and exploring downtown Scottsdale for starters.

There are also lots of opportunities for day trips to beautiful hiking trails if your family enjoys the outdoors.

We also took an overnight trip to Tucson to visit Saguaro National Park, and it was so fun to check another National Park off our bucket list.

4. Florida’s Emerald Coast

Florida’s Emerald Coast has some of the most pristine beaches in the state, and some of the best beaches in the country, making it a stellar family-friendly spring break destination.

mom and 2 kids in ocean

The Emerald Coast is made up of the stretch of beach cities on Florida’s Panhandle including Pensacola, Destin, 30A (Fort Walton), and Panama City. True to its name, the water has a gorgeous green hue, and the sand is sugary white and super soft.

Though it is not reliably hot during the spring months, you can still enjoy warm days and beach time (though the ocean is still too cold for Floridians to swim).

If you’re looking for a laid-back classic beach spring break with white sand beaches, you cannot go wrong with one or more of the cities along the Emerald Coast. It's the perfect place for fun in the sun!

5. Gatlinburg, TN

If the mountains are calling but you still want some sunshine, consider a vacation to Gatlinburg and the Great Smokey Mountains this spring!

IThe weather is around 70 and sunny, idyllic for family time in the fresh mountain air. With a plethora of log cabins, vacation rentals, and family-friendly hotels, you’ll be sure to find something that fits your family’s needs.

Though Gatlinburg itself has a more “touristy” vibe, we found plenty to do there and had tons of fun enjoying the spirit of the destination. Take a gondola ride up to Anakeesta, a small theme park with ziplining, restaurants, shopping, and scenic views, go to the top of the Gatlinburg Space Needle for gorgeous views, check out Ripley’s Aquarium, ride the free trolley, and go shopping in downtown Gatlinburg.

For a bit of outdoor adventure, take a scenic drive up to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and do some hiking, have a picnic, take in the views, or do some scenic drives. This is one of the best national parks to visit with kids with plenty of easy hikes. Plus it has free entrance!

6. Orlando, FL

What better place to go for a magical spring break than Orlando, Florida?

Wizarding world of Harry Potter hogsmeade

What better place to go for a magical spring break than Orlando, Florida?

Of course, you can visit Disney World, a spot on every kid’s bucket list, but you can also spend time at other theme parks like Universal Orlando if you have some Harry Potter fans! I took my daughter for her birthday and we had the best time immersing ourselves in all things Harry Potter.

Spend time on International Drive, swim with dolphins at Discovery Cove, or head over to Blue Spring State Park to see the manatees. You can even take a day trip to Kennedy Space Center in Merritt Island, FL.

One of my favorite times to visit Disney World is spring because of the Flower and Garden Festival going on at Epcot. Read all about why I think it’s such a family-friendly celebration here!

Another option would be taking a quick trip to LEGOLAND Florida, located in Winter Haven just 45 minutes away from Orlando. If you have a LEGO nut, there are so many fun themed rides and experiences to have there, and the LEGOLAND Hotel is 100% worth a stay.

7. The Oregon Coast

The Pacific Northwest isn’t what usually comes to mind when you’re planning a spring break trip, but that’s why it just may be the perfect spot!

Before we had kids, my husband and I flew out to Portland Oregon to visit some friends during our spring break (we were both teachers at the time), and ended up having the best time seeing waterfalls, mountains, the rocky coastline, and wineries.

Don’t expect warm sunny beach weather, but do expect to see some of our country’s most stunning scenery without the crowds.

Some things you should plan on your visit include Canon Beach, Depoe Bay, Silver Falls State Park, Columbia River Gorge, and Willamette Valley.

Bring a raincoat, good waterproof hiking shoes, and lots of layers. You might get lucky and have some nice days, but count on rain and a bit of a chill still in the air.

8. Savannah, GA

kids in front of the fountain at Forsyth Park in Savannah

Savannah, Georgia is absolutely gorgeous in spring! Flowers are blooming, the sun is shining, and the heat and humidity have not yet made it unbearable.

We loved exploring Savannah with the kids and used the trolley as our form of transportation around the city so we wouldn’t have to worry about parking.

Forsyth Park was a favorite of the kids, and I loved learning about the history behind the beautiful city squares. Walk along River Street, eat at the Pirates’ House, try some Leopold’s Ice Cream, and hit the Savannah Children’s Museum.

Optional add-ons to a Savannah trip include Atlanta, Tybee Island, Charleston, and Hilton Head, SC.

9. Amelia Island, FL

mom and 2 kids in pool

Just 2 hours south of Savannah is beautiful and quiet Amelia Island, FL. One of our most memorable and relaxing spring break trips with kids was to the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort.

The staff was so warm and friendly, the kids got their own turn-down service, and the pools were just perfect for enjoying the warm spring sunshine.

We looked for shark teeth on the beach, visited Fort Clinch State Park, stopped at Villa Villekula toy store, wandered downtown with ice cream, and explored at the Amelia Island Nature Center.

You’ll definitely be away from the spring break party crowds on this gorgeous island! Enough to do to keep you and the kids busy, but not so much that you feel rushed. We found it to be a great destination for families with young children.

10. Santa Barbara, CA

Kids at the Santa Barbara courthouse looking at mountains

You’ll find endless summer in the American Riviera, so if you’re looking for perfect weather and the option of mountains, beaches, vineyards, and history, you absolutely cannot beat Santa Barbara, CA.

There is SO much to do in Santa Barbara with kids, and we only stayed for 2 nights! The MOXI children’s museum was one of the best we’ve ever visited, Stearn’s Wharf offered stunning views of the city at sunset, the trolley tour was illuminating, and the Historic Courthouse is a must-do.

We didn’t have time to fit in outdoor adventure, but you could fit in beach days, numerous hiking trails, Channel Islands National Park, whale watching, and more!

We stayed at Hotel Milo and loved the room we had! It had a small alcove with bunk beds for the kids, and the most breathtaking views of the harbor at sunrise.

11. St. Louis, MO

kids jumping in front of the gateway arch

If you live closer to the middle of the country and want somewhere within road trip distance, St. Louis, MO is such a family-friendly city that our kids really enjoyed!

While the weather isn’t necessarily warm, you might get to enjoy some sunshine and 60-degree weather, and there’s nothing like the feeling of winter melting away in the midwest!

St. Louis offers Gateway Arch National Park, which is both fun and educational if you visit the museum and take the cable cars to the top of the arch!

You can also visit Grant’s Farm, the free St. Louis Zoo, the free Science Center, City Museum, and so much more.

We planned 3 days in St. Louis and it didn’t feel like nearly enough time! If you want an optional add-on, head over to nearby Springfield, IL to learn all about President Lincoln.

12. Las Vegas, NV

Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas

Las Vegas, NV might seem like a strange spring break destination for families, but there is so much to do with kids beyond the strip, especially if you enjoy getting outdoors with your kids. I would suggest using Las Vegas as your jumping-off point for the trip and exploring some of the amazing places in America’s southwest, which is what we did on our most recent spring break trip!

Some national parks within driving distance include Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Great Basin, Grand Canyon, and Capitol Reef. Meanwhile, local state parks like Valley of Fire and Red Rock Canyon are worth a visit, too!

In my opinion, Valley of Fire is highly underrated, and a beautiful place to visit and hike that's just a short drive from Las Vegas.

Even if you spend a day or 2 in Las Vegas, you can find tons of kid-friendly activities like M&M World, the Coca-Cola store, the Bellagio Fountains, Seven Magic Mountains, and so much more.

13. Sanibel Island, FL

Sanibel Island shells on a tree

Sanibel Island, Florida is one of the most idyllic family destinations I’ve ever visited. This barrier island off the coast of Fort Myers has an east-west orientation that acts as a scoop for shells to gather, meaning you’ll find a plethora of unique seashells on the beaches of Sanibel and Captiva Island.

Suppose you’re picturing renting a beach cottage, going shelling at sunrise with coffee in hand, biking around the island during the day, getting ice cream, and just enjoying island life. In that case, Sanibel is the destination for you!

You could easily stay on the island the entire time and have one of the most relaxing vacations of your life, or you could add a little adventure! Check out the Ostego Bay Foundation Marine Science Center to learn about the shrimping industry and marine life, visit Mound House, a museum and archeological dig site to learn about the Calusa Indians, or go island hopping and visit Cabbage Key which inspired Jimmy Buffett’s “Cheeseburger in Paradise.”

14. Nashville, TN

family in front of Nashville skyline

Nashville is another destination where you just don’t know what the weather will bring, but luckily there are plenty of options to choose from in rain, snow, or sunshine!

Check out the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Honky Tonks on Broadway during the daytime hours, Centennial Park for a full-size replica of the Parthenon, the Goo Goo Shop, Ryman Auditorium, the murals downtown, and try the donuts at 5 Daughters Bakery!

Don’t forget to cross the Pedestrian Bridge for perfect views of the Nashville skyline. It makes for the perfect spot for family pictures to remember the trip!

For anyone that loves country music, hot chicken, or vibrant city life, Nashville is a great choice for spring break.

15. St. Petersburg, FL

mom and 3 kids on beach by palm trees

Did you know St. Petersburg, FL averages 361 days of sunshine per year? If that doesn’t make it the perfect spring break destination, I don’t know what does!

Last spring, my 8-year-old daughter and I spent spring break lounging on the white-sand beaches in St. Petersburg and exploring all the city has to offer.

We loved the newly constructed St. Pete Pier with playgrounds, restaurants, splash pads, and waterfront walkways. The murals downtown are so fun, and you absolutely must see St. Pete Beach and the pink Don Cesar Hotel even if you don’t stay there.

Be sure to visit one of the most family-friendly beaches in Florida, Fort De Soto Park. In addition to tide pools and calm water, it also has a pirate ship playground, a historic fort to explore, and a cool pier where you can look for dolphins.

16. San Antonio, TX

the Alamo

Texas in spring is one of the most underrated spots for a vacation with kids! If you have a later spring break, make sure to start your trip in Austin so you can road trip through the Texas Hill Country to see the Texas wildflowers and bluebonnets.

Make your way down to San Antonio to see the Alamo, the historic Riverwalk, the missions, and the Pearl District.

The Riverwalk is teeming with hotels, restaurants, and shops, and it’s so fun to people watch and see the boats going by while enjoying a margarita. You can also take a river cruise to get a different perspective of the city!

Visit the San Antonio Botanical Gardens, the San Antonio Zoo, or head to one of the famous theme parks like Six Flags Fiesta Texas or Sea World & Aquatica San Antonio.

The weather is wonderful and warm, and there is such a variety of things to do and see.

17. Wisconsin Dells

2 boys in a slot canyon in Wisconsin Dells

Don’t overlook Wisconsin Dells when choosing your spring break destination! Did you know Wisconsin Dells is known as the Waterpark Capital of the World? There are so many indoor waterparks to choose from in this Central Wisconsin city, so if your kids love water slides they're sure to have a good time.

You wouldn’t know it by how touristy the downtown area is, but Wisconsin Dells originally became popular because of its beautiful natural setting. With rock formations, slot canyons, the winding Wisconsin River, and soaring bluffs, Wisconsin Dells is so much more than water parks.

If you bundle up, you’ll love the Upper Dells Boar Tour, which starts up again in mid-March after the winter season. The Upper Dells Boat Tour is the only way to reach Witches Gulch, one of the most stunning places to see in Wisconsin. It’s a slot canyon covered in moss, and hauntingly beautiful.

Splash in the water parks, explore the surrounding area, visit one of the nearby state parks (Mirror Lake or Devil’s Lake), feed the deer at the Deer Park, go shopping, play arcade games, and make some family memories you won’t soon forget.

18. Myrtle Beach, SC

This is a classic family vacation destination for a reason! My family used to visit every summer when I was a kid, and I have such fond memories of this city in South Carolina!

I have no doubt that this would make a great spring break destination with mini golf courses, Broadway at the Beach (an outdoor shopping area with restaurants, live entertainment, and attractions), family-friendly resorts with heated pools, and easy access to beautiful beaches!

Walk the oceanfront boardwalk, watch the Myrtle Beach Pelicans play, or simply relax on the beach. I guarantee the entire family will have a great time here. I know I did as a kid!

19. Washington D.C.

Is seeing the cherry blossoms in DC on your bucket list? Consider spending spring break in Washington DC for the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

Washington DC. is a great place to take kids with lots of free museums, plenty of history, and the opportunity to tour the White House!

You can enjoy the spring weather by strolling down the National Mall or checking out the many monuments in the area, like the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. The best part about visiting DC with kids is that most museums, monuments, and memorials are free to visit!

The best place to see the cherry blossoms in bloom is around the Tidal Basin. Take a stroll toward the Jefferson Memorial to see some of the most stunning cherry blossom trees in all of Washington DC!

We visited in early April and enjoyed 80º weather. The city is very walkable, so we didn't even bother bringing a car seat for our kids! We took the metro from the airport to the city center, then walked to all of the attractions we wanted to visit.

20. San Diego

San Diego is one of the best spring break destinations in the United States for families!

Naturally, one of the biggest draws is the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Kids will love the incredible animal exhibits, the double-decker bus tour, and the aerial tram that takes you from one end of the zoo to the other.

Near the zoo, you'll find Balboa Park, nicknamed "San Diego's Backyard." There you'll find museums, hiking trails, gardens, art galleries, and shops.

One of our favorite places to go in San Diego was the USS Midway Museum which is located on a real US Naval Aircraft Carrier. My kids loved the self-guided audio tour for kids and hands-on exhibits, including aircraft they could climb in and pretend to fly.

Just outside of San Diego, you can find La Jolla Cove where you can observe sea lions in their natural habitat. Then stop by Birch Aquarium at Scripps to check out the kelp forest tank!

Finally, San Diego is not far from theme parks like Universal Studios, Disneyland, and especially LEGOLAND California! We stayed at the Castle Hotel in LEGOLAND, which is located in Carlsbad, CA. We love LEGOLAND because it's geared especially toward kids ages 2-12.

21. Palm Springs

Maybe you think of a golf trip or a girls' weekend getaway when you think of Palm Springs, but there is so much to do with kids in the area, too!

One of the best things to do with kids is the Palm Springs Aerial Tram, which is located in Mt. San Jacinto State Park. It's the largest rotation tram car in the world, and ascends 2 miles up to the Moutain Station for epic views! Be sure to wear layers! While the weather in Palm Springs might be hot this time of year, it's much colder up in the mountains.

Palm Springs also has a zoo called the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens which is rated one of the top 10 zoos in the US!

If you're up for a day trip, head to Joshua Tree National Park about an hour away. We didn't have as much time as we would have liked in Palm Springs, so we opted out of Joshua Tree and decided to hike Palm Canyon located inside Indian Canyon. It's an easy out-and-back hike in the shade of the California Fan Palms with a beautiful oasis and pools of water.

22. Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a US Territory, so while it feels like you're leaving the country, there is no passport required for US citizens.

There are many popular resorts for families in Puerto Rico, but the best way to experience the island is by renting a car and exploring.

We stayed in San Juan for 3 days, then road-tripped to the west side of the island for 3 days.

In San Juan, you'll find many beautiful beaches like Escambron and Carolina, but you can also enjoy some history and culture in Old San Juan. The colorful buildings will capture kids' imagination, and San Felipe del Morro Fortress has incredible views of the sea and the city. Take a day trip to El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System!

When you head out to the west coast, stay near Rincon for access to even more breathtaking beaches. We like Sandy Beach with the kids. One of our favorite things to do was drive south to Cabo Rojo to see the dramatic cliffs and the historic lighthouse.

The weather in Puerto Rico in spring is sunny and warm, making it the perfect tropical getaway for spring break.

23. Boston

The weather might be hit-or-miss in Boston this time of year, but there is an abundance of things to do with kids both inside and outside.

Follow the Freedom Trail which connects 2.5 miles of historic sites related to the American Revolution, or visit Plymouth Rock, the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum, or Harvard. Then take a guided Duck Tour or a Hop-On Hop-Off Bus tour, both great ways to learn about the history of the city and see some of the top sights.

When the sun peeks out, head to Boston Public Garden to see the Make Way for Ducklings statues (be sure to read the book with your little ones before you go), then ride the swan boats.

Sports fans will want to tour Fenway Park, or even stay and watch the Redsox play!

If the spring weather is feeling more like winter weather, the Boston Children's Museum should keep you busy with 3 floors of hands-on exhibits. Other indoor activities include the Boston Museum of Science, the Harvard Museum of Natural History, or the Mapparium.

If a week feels like too long to spend in Boston, you can add on day trips to Salem, MA or Martha's Vineyard!

24. New York City

Pack layers if you're heading to NYC for spring break! If your spring break is in March, you may still be dealing with winter weather, but in April the flowers are in bloom and you'll get hints of the warm weather to come.

Whatever the weather, there is no shortage of things to do in New York City!

From iconic landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building to kid-friendly attractions like the Museum of Illusions, the Museum of Ice Cream, and the Color Factory, you'll have an abundance of options to add to your itinerary.

Other activities include Grand Central Station, watching a Broadway show, visiting the 9-11 Memorial, strolling Central Park, the Bronx Zoo, Times Square, and the New York Botanical Gardens.

25. Miami

If warm weather is essential for your spring break vacation, spend a week basking in the Miami sun.

Miami is so much more than South Beach! The Miami Children's Museum combines education and fun. My kids especially loved the sketch aquarium where kids could draw a fish, scan it, and then see it floating on a wall-size screen with the other sea creatures.

My favorite neighborhood is Little Havana where salsa music floats on the breeze and you can watch old men play dominoes in the park. Just thinking about strolling Calle 8 makes me crave Cuban coffee!

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, the former home of James Deering, is a slice of Miami life in the early 1900s with much of the original art and furniture still preserved. Kids will likely prefer strolling the gardens, though. The house backs up to Biscayne Bay, so you'll enjoy lovely views wherever you are on the property.

If you're looking for a family-friendly beach, try Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne!

Places we Haven't Visited Yet

We haven't visited these destinations, yet, but I think they would make incredible spring break vacations for families in the United States.

26. Oahu, Hawaii

Best known for Pearl Harbor, Waikiki Beach, and Honolulu, O'ahu offers more than enough activities for a week-long spring break. Whether your family prefers to hike in the jungle or lounge on the beach, you'll easily find plenty to fill your itinerary. I like that there is a combination of nature, relaxation, history, and culture, making it the perfect spring break destination for families.

27. US Virgin Islands

Another great destination with warm waters and sandy beaches is the US Virgin Islands. Unless you plan to take a ferry to the British Virgin Islands you won't even need to bring your passport!

You can choose between St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. No matter where you choose to stay, you'll fly into St. Thomas, the most developed of the 3 islands. Nature lovers will gravitate toward St. John, two-thirds of which is made up of Virgin Island National Park. St. Croix is great for history buffs and those that want to escape the crowds.

28. Utah National Parks Road Trip

One spring break trip we're dreaming of that doesn't involve tropical beaches is a Utah road trip to see the Mighty 5 National Parks. The Mighty 5 consists of Zion National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Arches National Park.

This spring break would consist mainly of outdoor activities like hiking, so it might be better for older kids or babies that you can just put in the baby carrier! There are so many wonderful spring break destinations in the United States for families!

Easy International Spring Breaks Near the USA

Though this is a blog post about spring break destinations in the United States, these 3 international destinations are easy to get to, offer warm weather, and might be the perfect option for your family.

29. Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a popular tourist destination for families thanks to its abundant wildlife, volcanic hot springs, outdoor adventure, stunning beaches, and friendly people. We visited Costa Rica in June, but the weather would be even better in March or April during the dry season!

We spent a few days in La Fortuna near the Arenal Volcano where we soaked in hot springs, went on a sloth tour, and enjoyed ziplining with the kids. The second half of our trip was spent in Sámara, a small beach town in the Guanacaste region where we rode horses and took a catamaran dolphin tour.

You can read all of the details of our trip here: Costa Rica One Week Itinerary for Families

30. Mexico

There are so many family-friendly destinations in Mexico it can be hard to choose! There are lots of beach resorts in Cancun, though it can get pretty crowded and touristy in that area. I personally enjoyed Guanajuato in the center of Mexico. If you prefer dramatic coastlines, Cabo on the West Coast might be the destination for you!

31. Bahamas

My one regret from our time living in Florida is that we never took advantage of living so close to the Bahamas! This one is still on our bucket list, but I wanted to include it here since it's so easy to get to from the US.

Many people enjoy the larger beach resorts like Atlantis Bahamas and Baha Mar on Nassau. The Exhumas might be better for adventure-loving families where you can take tours to see the wild pigs in Big Major Cay, plus rock iguanas and nurse sharks.

Hopefully, you found some ideas in this post to help you plan your next family spring break trip!
